Dell T3400 Price
I have a Dell Precision T3400 with 3GHz E6850 and am musing on a CPU upgrade. Why spend money on this Dell? Well, it's a nice unit, reasonably quiet, easy case to work with, 500watt supply and I got a great deal on it. I'll also probably be buying a Radeon 4870 or 90 or one of the new ATIs expected to be announced this month. Microsoft store software deinstallieren.
I've looked at the 3GHz Q9650 at a little less than AUS$400 but am wondering if pin modding a AUS$160 2.93GHz,1066MHz Core2 Duo E7500 (resulting in 3.63GHz) might not be a better option for my uses which are mostly gaming at present but may expand. Since I may be able to recover around AUS$130 selling the existing E6850 this would be very tempting for the 600Mhz boost if it will work.
Another option I have considered is pin modding a (AUS$320) Core 2 Quad Q6700 2.66GHz which would result in a 3.33GHz clock. More games these days are becoming quad friendly etc
Both CPU overclocks seem achievable without voltage boosts based on what I have read but will the Dell BIOS have a problem with them? The E7500 is a fairly recent CPU, will the Dell recognise it at all? Will there be a problem (assuming CPU stability) with the Dell BIOS recognising the Q6700@ 3.33GHz?
Given my expected usage are there any advantages to the Q9650?
thanks in advance
